Promoting social change for BIPOC* and animals

Souly Alliance is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to increasing racial equity, diversity, and inclusion in the animal welfare world.

Through outreach, humane education, and mentorship, Souly Alliance is building a safe space for BIPOC to learn, grow, and heal with animals.

*Black, Indigenous, and People of Color

Why is change needed?

In the United States:

  • The animal welfare field has not been inclusive of BIPOC

  • BIPOC represent less than 3% of veterinarians, less than 2% of veterinary technicians, less than 5% of professional dog trainers, and less than 5% of equestrians

  • Generational poverty, caused by systemic racism, makes pets unaffordable for many BIPOC families

  • Underserved BIPOC communities have limited or no access to pet care resources

  • BIPOC pet adoption applications are often rejected due to implicit bias (stereotypes and prejudice)

  • Pet companionship is still considered by some as a "white privilege" and BIPOC are denied the benefits of the human-animal bond

  • Dogs have been weaponized against Black people by law enforcement

  • Breed-Specific Legislation (banning dog breeds) is linked with racism

Representation Matters

Positive racial representation can improve self esteem, create feelings of belonging, and reduce harmful stereotypes. (If you want to witness the power of representation, just watch these video clips of girls reacting to the Little Mermaid trailer!)

Lack of representation, on the other hand, has been linked with low self esteem, depression, and feelings of isolation.

The predominantly-white animal welfare world can feel like an unwelcoming space for BIPOC. Souly Alliance was formed to change this narrative, and to foster a sense of belonging, support, and community.

The Color of Love

Souly Alliance's Color of Love programs were designed to build community and strengthen the human-animal bond. We teach responsible pet guardianship, facilitate animal-assisted activities, and support aspiring pet professionals. Through humane education and mentorship opportunities, we strive to increase BIPOC representation in animal-related activities, pet care professions, and rescue and shelter pet adoptions.
